Light
Bulb Survey 2006 |
A
survey was taken on how many non-Energy Efficient light
bulbs there were in the school. The location of the non-Efficient
bulbs was relayed to the caretakers, who replaced them with
CFL Lights, when the bulbs blew. These are highly Energy
Efficient and will cut down on energy usage, and last 8
times longer tan ordinary bulbs.

The
Young Environmentalist Awards |
This
year (2006/7) is the first year that the Green Group have
entered the Young Environmentalist Awards. The project is
run by ECO UNESCO, and has attracted many young individuals
and groups since its beginning in 1999.
The
aim of the awards is to support and honour young people
who take part in environmental projects which protect their
local environment, prevent environmental damage and promote
environmental awareness. This initiative empowers young
people to become active citizens through environmental project
work. Each project improves the quality of the environment
and therefore the quality of peoples lives locally and globally.
As
part of our entry into the awards the Green Group is running
an energy efficiency programme in the school. As you may
have noticed the green signs beside light switches, on windows
and on doors are part of this programme. The Green Group
also has set about getting energy efficient light bulbs
in all classrooms. This is only part of our plan for energy
efficiency and awareness, so expect to see more of us!

How
can we earn our Energy Flag? |
In
2005 Manor House was awarded a Green Flag for our Recycling
efforts in the school. This was achieved through the work
of the green group and every student and member of staff
in the school.
This
year we are applying for our second Green Energy flag. The
Green group has been working very hard to achieve this goal
and the next step concerns everybody in the school. The
following are simple steps you can do to be more energy
efficient in school and at home.
At
Home
- Change
light bulbs to CFL's as they use 80% less energy and last
8 times longer.
- Use
only the lights that are needed.
- Turn
off lights when leaving a room.
- Do
not leave TV's and other electrical equipment on standby.
This uses 20% of the electricity required when fully on.
- Put
heating on timer and use it.
- Turn
heating down by 1 degree as this saves 20% energy.
- Unplug
chargers when they are not being used. They use 20% of
the electricity required when fully on.
- Try
to use as few appliances as possible between the hours
of 5 and 7.
- Put
only the water you need in the kettle.
- Turn
off dishwasher before it reaches the drying cycle.
- Turn
on the washing machine and dishwasher only when they are
full.
-
Air-dry clothes as much as possible.
- Close
blinds and curtains in the evening to hold heat in the
house.
- Ensure
that there is a lagging jacket on your boiler; insulate
your house.
In
School
- Turn
off lights if there will be no one in the room for longer
than 30 minutes.
- Turn
off computers in classrooms when they are not going to
be used within the following 30 minutes.
- Turn
off computers in computer rooms at the end of the day.
- Set
computer monitors to energy-saving mode.
- Open
blinds in classroom on sunny days. This is the easiest
way to benefit from natural light and heat.
-
Do not open windows when the heating is on.
- If
rooms are too hot turn off some of the radiators or open
the door.
- Remove
obstructions from radiators.
- Check
that all bulbs in classrooms are flourescent or CFL bulbs.
If not, please report to your teacher.
- Walk,
cycle or car-pool to school

Tinfoil
radiators
Our
school is a big school and at times can be very cold. So as part
of our energy saving project the green group decided to cover
cardboard with tin foil and stick them onto the walls behind radiators.
This will reflect heat that may be lost into the wall, back into
the classroom. We have only started in the past couple of weeks
but have done a good bit. So far we have managed to fill the top
floor corridor and one of the art rooms. Already we can tell the
difference in the art room.

Appliance
Survey
As
part of our aim to decrease the amount of energy the school uses
we located appliances around the school to check their rating
which, by law, must now be displayed on products. Unfortunately
the member of the Green Group that was assigned this task was
unable to identify any ratings as they had been taken off. But,
from now on we have been told that products being bought for the
school will have the highest rating possible.

Book
Appeal For Liberia
In
November of 2006,the Irish Army and peace keeping troops gave
out an appeal for books to be sent to schools in Liberia. As a
green group initiative, the girls of Manor House donated unwanted
books to the ‘Book Appeal For Liberia’.A collection point was
set up in the library. All the collected books were loaded into
a van and sent off to Liberia, where children and adults benefited
from them.

Scribbles
"Scribbles"
are small notebooks that we make from recycled paper. The group
gathers old paper from our paper recycling bins and cuts them
into rectangular pieces and staples them together with a logo
on the front. We give them out, free of charge to help each student
study. We find them a big success, and a fun easy way to recycle
paper.
